Most Writers Are Losers and Many Are On Drugs

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:53 pm

We are a society, which looks up to the writers and authors amongst us. But before we give them a free pass to the higher level of society, shouldn’t we consider the reality of the situation? As a non-writer type I find it fascinating to psychologically profile all the writers, as most of these folks are not very devout about their writing, but like to think they are? Most writers are lazy and complain about writer’s block and such. Many write very little and think there writing is sooo wonderful; they act like pre-Madonnas.

Let’s take online writers for instance; anyone can become an online writer. So they write 100 articles submit them to one of a 1,000 online article submission sites and call themselves a writer? Interesting, as we now have a whole new group of up and coming online article writers, but unfortunately they are Pre-Madonna’s too, just like the writers at the New York Times who plagiarize, make stuff up and interject a liberal skewed view of the world at every turn.

In regards to the online new article writer well that is weak really, no offense to those who are working to achieve it, but most of the writers write very few articles and most of them are regurgitated knowledge they read somewhere? That does not take a whole lot of thought. Simply spouting the industry party-lines is just not worthy, there are enough people out there already doing that. Now all these writers want to go and make rules about their industry for instance the latest rule making procedure is about miss-spellings in Titles of articles? Give it a rest, that is just whining, who cares. It is truly amazing the level of hypocrisy of writers and as we know most suffer from depression and take drugs for it or are alcoholics. Consider this in 2006.

Adventures in Thailand with Your Camera

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:33 pm

Thailand is one of the best places to take your camera. Why? Because there’s so much going on in everyday life. Instant markets popup out of nowhere, suddenly a whole kitchen is driving by attached to a motorbike; then an elephant passes (and yes, you can be in Bangkok and watch elephants walking the roads). There are many many opportunities to take wonderful photos in Thailand.

So you want some examples of such photos? Then visit thailandimpression.com. On this website we show you our view of Thailand, not only through the lens of a camera, but in manipulation of the resulting photo – to twist the reality into sometimes subtle, sometimes radical new views of what the camera saw. Thailand is a rough and ready place – full of friendly people, dangerous drivers, food stalls on every corner, and dogs everywhere. Motorbikes with an entire kitchen attached lazily motor up and down the roads. Tuk-tuks drown out your conversation. Hotels give you 4 star service at 1 star prices. And so we want to show you random shots of the chaos and the tranquility through our gallery.

We offer very high-res shots (2848 pixels X 2136 pixels) that can be purchased for just £1 per photo. We hope our photos at thailandimpression.com will inspire you to visit Thailand and take your own photos there too!

Low Carb Diet Has Many Advantages for Obese San Franciscans

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:23 pm

Turn on the television today or surf health websites on the Internet and you’re sure to find a report or a study telling you how obese San Franciscans are becoming. And while some of those reports may be a tad histrionic, we are a nation of rapidly expanding waistlines, and our obesity is becoming a problem. Thankfully, there are a number of ways we can reduce our weight, including exercising regularly, controlling our portions and adopting a low carb diet.

If you are not familiar with a low carb diet, it is a program that limits the amount of carbohydrates a person can consume in a day. Since carbs are more difficult for the body to digest, they usually end up being stored in the body as fat. Therefore, if you limit the amount of carbs you consume, you can theoretically reduce the amount of fat you have in your body. So, out go breads and pastas, and in comes the meats, the soy and the leafy green vegetables. Although low carb diets have been around for years, they have recently exploded in popularity, and many swear by their effectiveness.

Similarly, low fat diets are also a popular way to control or reduce weight. Just as the name suggests, a low fat diet strives to limit the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol a person eats in a day. However, unlike a low carb diet, there are many other health benefits to a low fat diet. In fact, some studies have linked a low fat diet to lower cholesterol levels, a decrease in heart disease and even a reduction in the chance of breast cancer (although this finding has been recently challenged).

If you’re looking to lose weight, either a San Francisco low carb diet or a low fat diet could be your best bet.

Where Do You Like To Write?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:08 am

Recently, I came across an article in one of the magazines I read for lawyers that mentioned a special place, part of I mansion or a historic building that has been turned into a haven for writers.

They showed a picture of it, along with the proprietor, an ex-lawyer, herself.

Its décor is San Francisco Victorian, lots of reds, wood, and big wing chairs, as I recall.

You might call it warm and chummy.

Anyway, the article suggests that business is booming. Writers pay a monthly fee to ensconce themselves there for several hours, so they can do their craft, in peace, free from the distractions of their offices, homes and families.

Recently, I was on a ski trip to Lake Tahoe, and I stayed at a cozy place that gave me a living room right on the lake. The place was relatively empty as it was the off-season, and almost perfectly quiet.

But I felt no compulsion to write.

Apparently, peace and quiet and beauty are not prerequisites for putting my fingers to the keyboard.

In fact, I don’t mind a certain amount of racket around me as I compose, and some of my best writing has been done at coffee houses, where there are innumerable distractions.

I think I may even enjoy having a certain amount of humanity around me as I write. It makes me feel less isolated.

All of which brings up this key question: Where do YOU like to write?

I think it’s an essential query, because if you know, you can be efficient and happily productive. Also, you can avoid the frustrations and the fish-out-of-water flailing that can overcome you when you try to do your thing in the wrong locale.

If we were perfect, we could write anywhere about anything. But we’re not.

So, experiment.

Try different locations, and use those that work for you, because the “ideal” writer’s spot is the one where you produce.

Writing Fiction: Developing Your Book-length Story

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:48 pm

When you feel you have a great idea for a long story, it’s wise to think about the end result of your efforts before you begin the process of writing. Ask yourself some questions:

  • Who is my target audience?
  • Will my ideas provide the foundation for a rich plot with interesting characters?
  • What backup plan will I use to protect my work?
  • Do I have sufficient time and energy for this project?

If you feel your ideas are worthwhile, jot down the story in a couple of sketchy paragraphs, then use those sentences as a guide to create an outline. The outline should contain short sentences that describe the events of your story in sequential order. The outline then becomes the blueprint for your project. It also provides protection for your plot, and helps you to remember details, in case other commitments take you away from your writing for a significant amount of time.

Use the Margins

If you begin writing your story with paper and pen, leave margin space on each side of paper. That practice will provide an area for making notes and keeping track of key points involving your plot and your characters. As your story grows in length, you will be wise to create notes in the margins that remind you of details involving your characters so that you can create cohesive threads throughout your story.

Computer Backups

If you are writing your story in electronic form, be certain to maintain at least two copies at all times. Many writers have lost their manuscripts due to accidental deletions and faulty media. You may also want to store your work in two separate locations.

Feedback and Direction

You may want to obtain objective feedback about your story early in the writing process. You can find direction by signing up for writing courses, and by joining a writers group. Do a Web search for writers’ groups in your area. Some groups organize regular conferences, which provide opportunities for individual writers to have one-on-one meetings with reputable agents and editors. Honest, objective feedback from a seasoned professional may help you determine whether you’re writing for your own pleasure, or if you have a story with commercial appeal. Be judicious when sharing details about your story. You wouldn’t want someone else to use your ideas before you have a chance to write them down.

4 Great Places to do Research for Your Writing Project

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:07 am

No matter what subject you write on, there will be some research involved. Your opinion is the first step. Backing up your ideas with facts is the second step.

You can do the vast majority of your research online if the topic you have chosen is outside the company expertise. Online tools such as Google.com, Clusty.com, or Dogpile.com are a great place to start. However, using the correct searching techniques will make the difference between getting a great deal of information and getting a scant few.

Google.com provides a great cheat sheet for using advanced searching techniques. Go to http://www.google.com/help/cheatsheet.html then print out this valuable resource.

To make sure your search hits are up-to-date use the year in your search. For example: 2004..2006 will give you articles from the year 2004 up to this year. If you are looking for exact phrases put the phrase in quotation marks such as “VP Marketing” or “SL500 Lens”.

When you click on any of the links, check for the validity of the information. What is the source of the article, who wrote it, what is their expertise, or what other resources do they mention. Do not use internet results as the sole basis of your research, check other sources as well. You want your writing to reflect more than just opinions, you want the facts.

You can do more research using Amazon.com. Search for book titles on the target subject matter to get a list of recent publications. If any of the books are using the “Look Inside” feature, you will be able to scan the table of contents for relevant topics and even read the first few pages of the book – particularly the introduction. The Introduction will often give you a clue as to why the book was written and the target audience information. Other pertinent information about the book will be revealed by the popularity of the book and any reviews it may have received. This is all valuable when trying to discover relevance to your topic.

Having coffee at Borders or Barnes & Noble is also good. These book stores will allow you to skim through print publications while sitting in their coffee shops. This is a great way to research topics by skimming multiple books on the subject. This is even better than most libraries as the publications in bookstores are recently published. If you want to look at older versions, then head off to the library.

As time is often short, I most often rely on the Internet and Amazon Table of Contents to get most of my information. If books look like they give me the background I need, I simply buy the book.

The Mahabharata Essay

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:22 am

The Mahabharata is the longest epic in the world literature and is one of the greatest works of Indian literature, which incorporated philosophical, religious, and social basic ideas of the traditional Indian society. This work is very interesting from different point of view and it is so huge and informative that it seems that the entire life will be not enough to fully research this epic, not surprisingly that “what is found here, may be found elsewhere. What is not found here will not be found elsewhere” (Mahabharata).

Nonetheless, despite the variety of subjects and themes for analysis, this paper will be basically focused on the women depicted in the Mahabharata. Notably their actions will be analyse3d in the context of their influence on the family unity for to a certain extent they seem to be undermining traditional Indian moral and social norms and family unity. On the other hand, the actions of women are not ‘revolutionary’ for Indian society and may be treated as a transition from old moral and ethical norms to new ones and at the same time they may symbolize the vices of women that in actuality should be avoided that makes the Mahabharata a very important didactic work.

The impact of actions of women in the Mahabharata on family unity and social norms

On reading the epic, a reader cannot fail to feel the power of the female characters depicted and at the same time for a reader having profound knowledge of Indian culture some actions of some women may seem to be shocking and unacceptable in the traditional Indian society. Moreover, to a certain extent some actions of women in the Mahabharata are quite strange and shocking even for a reader who lacks knowledge about Indian society and Indian cultural and social norms because such actions violates universal moral and ethical basics.

In order to better realize it, it is necessary to recall the story of the ancestors of the Pandavas and Kauravas, notably that of Santanu, the king of Hastinapura, and the beautiful Ganga, the river goddess in disguise, whom he marry on the condition that he never questioned her actions. However, her actions are strange enough and Santanu seems to be a really strong and patient person and loving husband for he did not ask his wife about the explanation of her actions for such a long time. The problem was that Ganaga, bearing seven sons, threw each of them into the river. Quite naturally Santanu could not fail to eventually question his wife the reasons of her actions and Ganga had to reveal her divine origin and told that her children had once been celestial beings, and were cursed to become human. This is why she ‘punished’ them by drowning into the river. On explaining everything to her husband, Ganga left him with their last son Devarata.

Obviously this episode is very dramatic and probably one of the most shocking for traditional Indian society, as well as for many other world cultures. At the same time, it should be pointed out that traditionally Indian society respected a lot numerous gods and goddesses and their actions were rarely severely criticized. Nonetheless what Ganga did could not and still can hardly be done by any human being in Indian society without serious consequences. What is meant here is the bunch of actions that are absolutely unacceptable for Indian society. First of all, Ganga killed her own children that was a very serious crime from both moral and legal point of view. Naturally a mother killing her own children cannot contribute to the family unity and traditionally is rejected if not punished by the society in India as well as in other societies throughout the world.

Furthermore, she left her husband and her last son that is also reprimanded in Indian society. In fact, she ruined her family completely, by firstly killing her children and eventually leaving her husband and her last child. The only thing that can somehow justify her actions is the deal made before the marriage when Snatany agreed not to question her. Nonetheless this argument is too weak to make Ganga’s actions less terrible.

Another female character of the Mahabharata, Amba, seems to be also quite tragic. She is a sister of Bhishma who has chosen a suitor despite the fact that her brother fights off all of them. Bhishma allows her to leave but Amba is eventually abandoned by her husband and returns to Bhishma and asks to marry her. In a way this story is similar to the story of Ganga, though this time the woman is abandoned by her husband, but she is abandoned by Bhishma as well because he refuses to marry her. Probably in such a way the social protest against destruction of family is expressed. In fact, the story of Amba didactically indicates that women have to obey to men, otherwise they will be punished and their life will be ruined.
At the same time, it would be a mistake to think that all female characters either ruin or cause the ruin of their families in a way in the Mahabharata. Unlike Ganga and Amba, Gandhari may serve as an example of a woman who is ready to sacrifice herself for the family unity’s sake. In order to be closer to her husband and like her husband, Dhritarashtra who is blind, Gandhari covers her eyes with a blindfold which she will never remove. In such a way she rejoins him in his world of darkness. Such actions of Gandhari seems to be quite strange for their marriage is arranged that implies that probably they did not know and really love one another at the beginning but for the family unity she is ready to make such a sacrifice.

Furthermore, another female character that worth attention in the context of the family unity and social norms is Draupadi, who picks her husband from a number of suitors but in actuality she becomes only a ‘prize’ that is occasionally shared by five brothers for when Arjuna announces about his ‘prize’ his mother, not knowing what the prize is, tells him to share with his brothers. Obviously such a situation may seem to be the consequences of strange circumstances but in actuality it is Draupadi who is really responsible for such a situation, for in the former life, she has prayed to the god Shiva for a husband five times, and thus is ‘rewarded’ for her devotion in this life. Obviously, her life with five brother is absolutely unacceptable to moral principles of Indian society and does not contribute to the family unity since it provokes quarrels and conflicts between brothers. On the other hand, Draupadi is also often humiliated. For instance she has been humiliated during the dice game and she swears that she will be avenged. Frightened by her curses, Dhritarashtra apologizes to her and gives her husbands’ back everything they lost, but Draupadi asks nothing for herself, saying, “Greed devours all beings and is dharma’s ruin. I refuse greed” (Mahabharta). In such a way, Draupadi seems to be the person who is stronger than the brothers and who can keep moral and social norms that makes this character quite controversial since, on the one hand, by her prays for a husband, she provokes conflicts in the family and social prejudice, on the one hand, she remembers about social and moral norms when her husbands, or at least some of them have forgotten about it.

Great Telephone Skills

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:56 pm

Having good telephone skills is crucial as the call may be the catalyst for a prospective sale or provide vital counseling for a member of public. However, since both parties may not see each other face-to-face, a telephone conversation may not lead to favourable results; on the flip side, it may lead to unintended misunderstanding.

Here are some tips:

Even voice tone

It is important to speak clearly in an even tone. If you are anxious or even short of breadth, the other party may perceive that you are distracted. This may cause the phone conversation to be terse and unproductive.

Identify Yourself

It is important to identify yourself to the other party before you proceed with the conversation. It is not a good idea to assume that the other party knows you.

Ask For Identification

Along the lines of the above point, you should also ask for the identity of the other party. You do not want to reveal confidential information to the wrong person on the other line! This is not as a far-fetched since speaking on a mobile phone may create identity distortions as compared to using a fixed-line phone.

Structured Call

If you are making a sale over the phone, it is important to ask the customer if you can have a few minutes of his time. You should then proceed with providing more important features of the product. Be mindful that if the receiver is speaking as if he is driving, his mind may not be fully registering what you are selling – in this type of situation, it will be more productive to call him at his office or home.

Emotional Caller

If you receive a call from a member of public who is in an emotionally unstable state, it is good to ensure that you are not in a distracting environment; you should ensure that your full attention is with the caller. Remember not to speak too loudly and allow other people to get details of your confidential phone conversation.

Incoming Call

It is rude to abruptly pick up an incoming call and expect your phone partner to hold. If the incoming call is urgent, it is a matter of courtesy to tell your phone partner that you will get back to him shortly. Remember to get his number.

Using the email/fax

In sales, you can complement the phone conversation with email attachments or even a fax. This allows you to go through the product’s specification and together be more persuasive in closing the sales. The other party is able to better visualize your product.

Your handset

If the battery in your handset is running low, remember to inform the other party. It also good practice to ask for his number if it is not reflected in your phone system.
